I’ve known rivers

And followed them to their frozen beginnings.

Back in Sydney this morning after a trip that will stay with me for a long time. For now I’m going to be brief (though fear not, I have a series of vignettes planned already) and only say, if you’re looking to learn something about yourself, the world you live in, and the people who live in it with you, ignore your government’s travel warnings and get your ass over to Nepal.

Sadly I can’t even upload a single photo to show you tonight, as I’ve just discovered that I left behind the cable that connects my little digital camera to a computer. God only knows why I took it at all, when in most nights I slept in places that were more than a days’ walk to the nearest telephone. And with all due respect to the health and education challenges this poses to the people who live there, no one can deny the presence of a richness and spirituality that expands to fill the space when you don’t have these things.

Oh, and I’ve known mountains as well as rivers, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to make a reference to one of my favourite poems.
